A Sense Of Perspective Is Required

Reading the Twittersphere and some forum posts on Saturday night I was beginning to wonder if a large section of our fans had had a mind transplant with the Arsenal fans – all kinds of people calling for Bruce’s head, saying he’s lost the dressing room, the players won’t play for him, blah blah blah.

May I recommend a sense of perspective?

We are 4th in the league.  3 points ahead of Burnley in 5th – with a better goal difference.  8 points ahead of Sheffield Wednesday in 7th.  Just 3 points behind Derby in 2nd.

This is the Championship.  We have been in this division before – some people seem to forget this.  The teams at the bottom will occasionally beat us.  We will beat teams above us.

We have no God-given right to finish top without losing a game.

We have 6 points out of 9.  I would have taken that after the Leeds game – I am sure you would too.  In fact, if you had offered me 4th before the season started, I would have snapped your hand off.  I’d still take 4th right now as a finishing position.

Granted you could instead argue that we have 7 points out of 18, which is worse than Rotherham’s form.

Finally, we have a manager who has proven time and time again that he knows how to get promoted from the Championship.  If you are a Bruce Out merchant, who are you expecting to replace him?  Mourinho?  Ancelotti?  Who has the experience of getting teams with big egos, promoted?

Sure, Bruce isn’t going to bring us swashbuckling football any time soon, we are not going to start winning 3-0 every game.  But he will ensure we are challenging at the top.

Realistically the only decent managers we could possibly attract are Gary Monk, Mark Warburton or Steve Clarke.  Neil Warnock, perhaps?  Gus Poyet?  Tim Sherwood?  Are any of them more likely to get the best out of our players, and get us promoted, than Steve Bruce?

Not to mention, Brucey knows how to get money out of the Allams.

Anyone calling for Bruce’s head seriously needs to check themselves – or go and support Arsenal.

If we don’t finish top 6 this season, then is the time to question.
